Poprzednikami Sztoertebekera, Goedekego, 'Magistra' Wittbolda i kolegów byli na Bałtyku tak zwani Bracia Witalijscy, na których wspomnienie drżała cała ówczesna Hanza. Braciszkowie, którzy z żadnym zakonem nie mieli nic wspólnego, nie mogli narzekać na brak szczęścia. Oto pod koniec XIV wieku, kiedy Vitalienbrueder bazowali w gotlandzkim Visby, wspomniana Hanza pospołu z Duńczykami spod znaku tzw.
